When God Makes You Wait: Trusting When Things Aren’t Changing

September is here and with it comes the season of change. We are all ready to pull out our pumpkins and sweaters, to sit by the fire, and drink hot apple cider.

But, for most of us, the weather won’t cooperate. Here in Texas it’s still as hot as it was during the summer with the humidity making being outside unbearable. This usually goes on till around November, possibly December. And it’s hard to wait for my favorite season, especially when I have to watch others enjoy it.

But I can’t rush nature and, in the same way, we can’t rush God. Everything is in His time, not ours. And when it’s in His timing, it is the most beautiful.

I can’t will the leaves to turn color here. I have to wait for that to happen. But when it does, I’m always taken aback by the bright, beautiful colors that signify the trees shedding their leaves and going to sleep for the winter.

The same is true with God. When we wait for things to be in His timing, we can be taken aback at the beauty of it.

And in the waiting? We should worship, pray, build our relationship with Him.

And when that gets hard? Tell Him so. God welcomes our laments and wants us to share them with him. It’s not something we should hold back – it’s something we should feel we can do without hesitation.

So when things don’t change, keep hanging on to His Words. He doesn’t abandon us in those waiting periods, though it can feel like it.

No, instead He uses those times to bring us closer, to teach us to lean on Him, and to trust that He has our best interests at heart.

And, sometimes, He uses those times to change the desires of our hearts into ones that more align with His own.

So, if you are in a season of waiting, surrender your desire to Him, ask what He would have you do in this season, and then rest in the comfort of knowing that He isn’t leaving you or forsaking you but instead waiting until the timing is perfect.

“As for God, his way is perfect: The Lord’s word is flawless; He shields all who take refuge in him.” -Psalm 18:30 NIV
